Goodreads Synopsis –
All legends are born of truths. And just as much lies. These are mine. Judge me for what you will. But you will hear my story first.
I buried the village of Ampur under a mountain of ice and snow. Then I killed their god. I’ve stolen old magics and been cursed for it. I started a war with those that walked before mankind and lost the princess I loved, and wanted to save. I’ve called lightning and bound fire. I am legend. And I am a monster.
My name is Ari.
And this is the story of how I let loose the first evil.
I just want to highlight and thank Felipe de Baros for the gorgeous cover art as it was the first thing that grabbed my attention and bought this book under my radar.
That was the first thing but the second thing that made me this book a priority to-be-read is the fact that ‘The First Binding’ takes its inspirations from South Asia, specifically India. Being a desi myself, I am always looking for more representation of myself in the books that I read. And after reading the book I can gladly said that man was I right.
This story is told from the perspective of Ari – a travelling storyteller. We slowly hear the events that unfolded in Ari’s life and that is what the entire book is based upon. Not going to lie, Ari came off a bit obnoxious to me at the start but as I started to know about his past, I understood him much more.
This is a beautiful and tragic story. The writing was immaculate and I also loved how the myth and lore shaped the whole world. It was original and quite refreshing. The way the Mutri empire, social interactions and caste system was shown had me intrigued.
This book is so huge that the story could easily be divided into multiple ARCS and I love all of them but the Sparrow ARC definitely had me on the edge of my seat most of the time. There are so many up and downs and so many feelings that you get from this book. It was such an ethereal experience.
The only complain I have about this book is that perhaps it could have been a bit shorter ? It took me forever to finish it but nevertheless a wonderful book all in all.
Overall – ‘The First Binding’ was one of my most anticipated releases of 2022 and I am happy to say that it met my expectations. A worthy Epic South Asian Fantasy to look out for.
MY RATING – ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1/2
